A fire that started in a hay lot this afternoon near Mound City was contained, but firefighters remained at the scene throughout the evening to ensure there were no flare-ups, Lacey Perman, Campbell County Sheriff said at about 6 p.m.
No one was injured in the fire, Perman said.
The fire started about 2 p.m., about 10 miles southwest of Mound City, said Walworth County Sheriff Duane Mohr.
Several fire departments including Selby, Mobridge, Mound City, Java, Akaska, Herreid, Glenham and Pollock responded.
Perman said an official cause has not been determined; it's possible one of the hay bales overheated in the sun, he said.
No structures were damaged, Perman said.
